26 Feb A Session at Grass Lounge: Medical Marijuana Cards and Youth Access
In contrast to many other cannabis trade shows and cups who charge a premium price to attend, Grass Lounge made some strategic moves that ensured a worthwhile event for local businesses as well as industry advocates and enthusiasts. By sending out free passes to all dispensary owners in the San Diego region, the event brought the vendors’ target audience within reach and improved the odds of doing some real business at Grass Lounge.

On February 19, 2017 in Chula Vista, Hemp Educate America Foundation was on a mission to inform guests and attendees the health and economic benefits of cannabis and hemp at The Gallery Sesh. We also focused on points of emphasis including youth access and ballot votes that legalized cannabis adult use this past election. We surveyed and examined the relationship of youth cannabis use and perceived ease of access with the number of medical marijuana cards at the county-level, and marijuana norms as indicated by percent of voters approving legalization of adult cannabis use in 2016.
Living in San Diego county with more medical marijuana cards was not related to lifetime or 30 day cannabis use. However, voter approval of medical marijuana was positively related to lifetime and 30 day use. Perceived ease of access to cannabis was positively related to medical marijuana cards, but this relation became non-significant when voter approval was controlled. Among cannabis users, medical marijuana cards and voter approval were positively related to perceived ease of access.
The relation between medical marijuana cards and youth use may be related to an overall normative environment that is more tolerant of cannabis use. Interventions to prevent youth cannabis use should focus on adult norms regarding use by and provision of cannabis to youths.
More in-depth research studies and results to follow when recreational cannabis use for adults becomes available next year on January 1, 2018.
Local to the region and seeking to learn more about starting a business in the cannabis space, or just learning and participating in the industry? Attend The Gallery Sesh at Grass Lounge on Sunday, March 19th 2017, from 1pm to 8pm. There will also be some speakers giving a broad cannabis industry overview – another great decision on the event’s part to include more locals in the conversation.
